Kendrick Lamar has used his first sneaker with Reebok in hopes of bringing unity between the two biggest gangs in his hometown: the Bloods and the Crips. After almost a year after his announcement of a collab. with Reebok — Compton, California’s beloved Kendrick Lamar has finally come out with sneakers called theKendrick Lamar x Reebok Ventilator, with a message advocating peace between gangs.
The design of the sneaker is off-white in palate, featuring words “red” on the heel of the right shoe and “blue” on the heel of the left. In deeper detail, his name “Kendrick Lamar” and his famous group of brother’s that make up “TDE” — both inscribed on the front of the tongue and the word and “neutral” in bold font on the inside.
The meaning of the colors of red and blue are to signify a call for peace between the Bloods and the Crips, the two respective colors of the
opposing gangs in Los Angeles. This is not the first time Kendrick Lamar has advocated this type of message. In his cover art for his song ‘i‘, released back in September, the rapper showed two rival gang members dressed in red and blue forming hearts with their hands.
In speaking on the album cover art back in a September 2014 interview, K. Dot said:
“Where I’m from, there’s a lot of gang culture and things like that, so instead of throwing on up gang signs, which we used to, I put a Blood and I put a Crip together and we’re throwing up hearts. Sparking the idea of some type of change through music or through me because I go back to the city now and people give me the honor and respect that, you know, this kid can change a little bit something different that’s been going on in the community.“
